For Bosch Rexroth in Boxtel, The Netherlands Xensor developed an absolute position measuring sensor system for hydraulic cylinders. This sensor system is part of the absolute position measuring system, called Ciams (Ceramax Integrated Absolute Measuring System).

Ciams is supported by a cylinder with a unique code system, consisting of local grooves, arranged in a unique pattern different for every piston rod position.
The code, with built-in redundancy and truth-check, enables interpolation of the precise position down to one hundredth of a millimeter. The local code (= groove pattern), determined using an array of magnetic sensors, can directly be converted into cylinder position as expressed in millimeters.

The surface of the piston rod is scanned at high speed over a length which covers approximately 130% of the code length, thereby offering extra possibilities for code checking and error correction.

The CIAMS instrument consists of:
=  a surface scanner with sensors and magnet.
=  a micro-processor module, with:
     -  an analog output.
     -  a RS232 serial communication link.
     -  a CAN bus.

All parts are packaged in a water tight aluminum housing with steel cover.
