The silicon sensor consists of 40.000 distance measuring sensors using an improved capacitive principle. The sensor can be programmed in such a way that it is insensitive to common problems, such as a ghost-image due to remaining sweat. This principle has been recently filed at the Swedish Patent Office. 
The chip is fabricated by Mietec-Alcatel. The system has been developed in cooperation with Nordic VLSI for Fingerprint Cards AB. One of the application fields is the telecom market for securing portable phones.
